New to SITS? Welcome!! Go read this to get started.
Welcome to the weekly blogging tip and comment game! This week I’m talking about creating an elevator pitch for your blog.
Most of us have heard marketing gurus tell us about the importance of having an elevator pitch. An elevator pitch is a concise and compelling description of your product or business that can be delivered in the time it takes to ride an elevator. It helps you have something impressive to say about what you do when the opportunity arises. In terms of blogging, we’ve all had that awkward feeling while trying to explain exactly what blogging is.
An elevator pitch not only comes in handy when telling people what you do, but it also gives you focus. As Darren Rowse of Problogger writes in his book, 31 Days to Build a Better Blog, “Knowing what your blog is about helps you in developing every aspect of it.” It can help you create content, pitch to the media, network with other bloggers and attract readers. Problogger’s post on the elevator pitch is a must-read.
There are many blogs out there competing for attention and no one wants to spend time sifting through months of archives to find out what you’re all about. Take some time to think about why you blog and what the primary focus of your blog is. Then create your elevator pitch and use it as a mission statement. Include it on your “about” page and in your sidebar where visitors can easily find it.
This is not to say that you can never write “off-topic” or change your blogging mission over time. But it is extremely valuable – to you and your readers – to have a clearly defined statement that tells the world, “This is what I’m all about.”
Now, let’s play a game! Here are the rules for the SITS Saturday Sharefest:
- Leave a comment here with a link to one of your best blog posts (or just your main URL if you prefer).
- After you leave your comment, visit the link of the person who commented BEFORE you.
- Comment on their post and be sure to say “Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest” in your comment.
This last part is really important because other people visiting our blogs will see the “sharefest” and wonder, “What the heck is that?” Then they might seek us out and we’ll get even more people involved in SITS. Get it? Good? Now, go play nice and leave some comments!
