Welcome to the weekly blogging tip and Saturday Sharefest comment game! This week I’m talking about adding social media icons to your sidebar.
I’ve written before about the importance of having RSS and social media buttons in a prominent place on your blog. Today I’m going to tell you exactly how to add them to your sidebar.
Step 1: Find some graphics you like and download them onto your hard drive. Check out this post for some great icons or simply Google “social media icons.”
Step 2: Once you’ve downloaded the graphics you like, choose the specific icons you want to use on your blog. Most of the icon sets you download will include several graphics you won’t use and often several different sizes. For example, the set you downloaded may include icons for RSS, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Digg in 3 different sizes each. But perhaps you only want to use the RSS, Twitter and Facebook icons in the smallest size. Select the icons you want to use and upload them to a free image hosting site like Photobucket.
Step 3: For each social media icon, find the link code from the image hosting site. Use the direct link option. It should look something like this:

Step 4: Now you need to put the HTML code in a widget so your icons show up and link to your social media accounts. Below is the HTML format to use — be sure to substitute your own URLs for your social media accounts (your Twitter page, your Facebook page, your RSS feed URL, etc) and your link code from the image hosting site (from Step 3):
Create code like this for each of your icons. The a href part is the URL you want to go to when you click on it. The img src part is the link code to your image (from Photobucket or similar service).
Step 5: When you get all the code typed in, save the widget and see how it looks on your blog.
I hope this helps you get some of those adorable icons into your sidebar and encourage your readers to connect with you more online!
