How To Back Up Your Blogger Blog

New to SITS? Welcome!! Go read this to get started.

Welcome to the weekly blogging tip and comment game! This week I’m talking about backing up your Blogger blog.

If you blog on the Blogger platform (blogspot) you may not realize that Google owns your blog. You are using their service for free and they have total control over the storage of your posts and comments. You might be thinking, “Hey, it’s GOOGLE. They are huge and awesome and they’re not going anywhere!” Perhaps. But even huge and awesome companies can have technological mishaps and hacker attacks.

I have read about several cases where a blogger’s blog has simply disappeared. Google couldn’t explain it or get it back. I’ve also read about situations where Google decided to block a blog (not allow you to access or post) for policy violations, even when the blogger did not really (or intentionally) violate any policy. And it can be a long wait battling Google for control of your blog again.

The key to controlling your blog content is to back it up. There is a very simple way to do this. In your Blogger dashboard, click on “Settings.” Then click on “Export Blog.” On the next page, click on “Download Blog” and you will be able to save a file to your hard drive with all your posts and comments.  Back up your blog on a regular basis and you’ll never find yourself at the mercy of Google.

Now, let’s play a game! Here are the rules for the SITS Saturday Sharefest:

  • Leave a comment here with a link to one of your best blog posts (or just your main URL if you prefer).
  • After you leave your comment, visit the link of the person who commented BEFORE you.
  • Comment on their post and be sure to say “Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest” in your comment.

Now, go leave some comments! And today is my birthday, so please swing by and visit my new blog, Mom Improvement!

  14. I have this in my calendar to do on a monthly basis. I don’t blog a LOT so it would be fairly easy for me to recreate my posts if need be (I just changed it to a bi-weekly basis! ha!) I was traveling when the last reminder came through so THANK YOU for your reminder!

Take a look around my blog… comment on whichever post (or posts if you’re so inclined) you’d like. I look forward to hearing (reading) your comments!
