NY Times Article About Mommy Bloggers

New to SITS? Welcome!! Go read this to get started.

So, we interrupt our regularly scheduled feature today to talk about something.

Today is NOT about roll call, but it is about support.

For those of you who haven’t heard or read, the New York Times ran a piece this Sunday about mommy bloggers.

And, about Bloggy Boot Camp.

It’s titled Honey, Don’t Bother Mommy, I am too Busy Building My Brand {we thought long and hard about even linking to it, as even though Tiffany is referred to AND quoted, SITS has no link, plus, the last thing we want to do is give them page views.  BUT, you deserve to form an opinion with all the info.}

Below we have linked up some of the responses to the article.

We encourage you to take the time and read the posts and comment.  Become part of the conversation.

Tiffany Honey, I Just Want to Connect Women.

Heather It’s Heather-speak, for “I’m a little miffed.”

Jessica Gottlieb  Don’t Bother Mommy, She’s Rabid Right Now.

Liz, Mom 101 Honey, Don’t Bother Mommy, I am writing a Mildly Annoyed Letter to the NY Times.

Kelby Carr Newspaper Bias Against Mom Bloggers

Mama Kat Honey, Don’t Bother with the NY Times.  They Are Too Busy Slamming Your Mommy.

Angela England Blogging and Motherhood- Success is Not Limited to One or the Other.

Francesca, Mayhem & Moxie And Then There Was the Time I Sounded Like an Ass in the New York Times.

We know there are even more well-written responses out there – in fact, there is an entire facebook group dedicated to this topic.

So there you have it.

Of course, tomorrow, we return to our regularly scheduled Featured Blogger!

We adore you all.

Big Time.

xoxo

I think an awful lot of people have mistaken what reporting is (too much time blogging, perhaps?) – reporting is not about being supportive. It’s about reporting. You may not like it, but if a conference organizer is running around in bare feet, she’s making a statement and that’s going to be picked up and reported on.

There seems to be a lot of emotion wrapped up in the response, which isn’t surprising given that people are blogging about their personal lives, which doesn’t jive with what reporting is about.

Mommybloggers aren’t the first community to feel the sting of a reporter’s pen. It’s par for the course – things always look different on the inside, but I’m not convinced that the insider’s view is necessarily the more correct one than that of someone (in this case a reporter) looking in. The closer you are to something, the harder it is to maintain objectivity. As the backlash to this article clearly shows.

At the end of the day, this is mostly a bunch of dissatisfied, white, middle-class women whining about the choices they’ve been fortunate enough to have in their lives.

And, sorry, but it’s hard to take something seriously when it’s called “Bloggy Boot Camp”. It kind of screams sorority and pom-poms. As does signing off a blog post with “We adore you all… xoxoxo”. Of course no one is going to take you seriously.

Is it just me, or do the most scathing commenters always seem to hide behind the “Anon” namesake? Kinda sad, really.

  7. Hello, A good friend of mine referred me to your site, and I must say that I am very glad that I visited. The information is “gold” to me. I will also be referring some of my friends to your site as well. It is amazing what you can learn online today. Thanks a lot.

  8. I am SO miffed about this. She and I chatted for 20 minutes about some very interesting things and all she got from it is I watch a soap opera? I keep thinking that I need to respond, but I was on vacation when it hit and now it’s ages old. I was thrilled to be mentioned, then I read it and whoa. It really bothered me. It was tremendously condescending and I felt like she was not at all at the same conference I was.

  9. I high appreciate this post. It’s hard to find the good from the bad sometimes, but I think you’ve nailed it! would you mind updating your blog with more information?
