What to Wear: A Blog Conference Guide

Our 2011 Bloggy Boot Camp tour kicks off this weekend in San Diego.  We’re out of our minds excited!  The chance to meet our community in person, exchange hugs, and have some fun in the sun is wonderful.

One of the most common questions we receive prior to any conference is, What should I wear?  Is the attire business casual?  Are jeans OK?  What about the cocktail party?  How formal is that?  Rather than continuing to answer this question in e-mail, we’d thought we’d ask our resident design and style expert, Renee from Studio Bold, to lend us her fab fashion sense for a day.  Not only does Renee have mad skillz when it comes to blog design, but she also regularly stalks JCrew and all her favorite Etsy shops to get the latest scoop on what’s hot and in style.

Below are Renee’s recommendations guaranteed to help you feel your best at any conference this spring.  Enjoy!

Spring is in the air and Bloggy Boot Camp San Diego is right around the corner. If you’re like me, you’re wondering what you can do to freshen up your wardrobe this season in order to look sophisticated and sassy at Bloggy Boot Camp.

The Cargo Dress

A casual spin on the “little black dress” concept, this little number can be worn comfortably all day long at the conference and still look great for cocktails. To dress it up, simply put on higher heels and bolder accessories. The looks above can be found at Ann Taylor, Boden USA, Nordstrom and JCrew.

footwearThe Neutral Peep Toe

The must-have shoe for this season. It’s not quite thong weather in most parts of the country so these shoes do a great job of showing off just the right amount of skin. From sandals to wedges to espadrilles to boots they come in all styles and heel heights so you can pick something that you know you’ll be comfortable in. And the neutral color goes with anything in your closet. You’ll find similar styles in every store but the above shoes are at Nordstrom, Kohl’s, Banana Republic and Anthropologie.

The best choice for that easy-to-throw-on sweater — and a must-have for air-conditioned conference rooms. The v-neck cardigan has an angled neckline and low buttons that works perfectly with the collars on trendy ruffled blouses and tees. Wear it long or short, belted or buttoned. The styles pictured are from Ann Taylor Loft, Nordstrom and JCrew.

trenchThe Trench

This is the coat you’ll want to bring to Bloggy Boot Camp this spring. This lightweight layer is easy to fold up and stuff in your laptop bag or sling over your purse handle. And the traditional style and 3/4 length make it suitable for pants, skirts or dresses. Choose a neutral color to match every outfit or pick a bold color or print to make a statement. These trenches are from Gap, Talbot’s, Boden USA and Ann Taylor Loft.

Even though I can’t go to your amazing conference (sniff) I was so thrilled to get these tips. I have zero natural fashion sense. I appreciated your showing all shapes and (ahem) sizes. 😉

I had so much fun!! My husband suggested wearing something memorable. Something that stood out. I picked a bright orange vintage jacket and it was a FABULOUS conversation starter!

I’m off to check my backyard to see if the money tree sprouted….I suddenly have the urge to go shopping for a new spring wardrobe!

Love the peep toe shoes from Nordstrom, I would get so much wear out of them. But I’m still trying to buy no new clothes or shoes this year and I don’t think we have Nordstrom in the UK.

Hope you all have a fabulous time at BBC this weekend!

I LOVE the cargo dresses with a nude peep toe. Throw in a cute little cardigan with some minor detailing and you will be IRRESISTIBLE! GREAT post!

What a great idea for a post! As far as BB camp, I wish I were going to be there! Maybe next year.. or.. maybe when it comes to the east coast. Yay!!

I’m sorry, but .. and don’t get me wrong, I know life goes on and people need to enjoy life … in light of recent events .. this just seems like very small beans. Maybe it’s just me, and I’m sure I’ll catch flack, but I stand by it. Was there really nothing on the back burner with a little more substance?
I don’t think I’m alone here; usually by now there are well over a hundred responses.
    Just saying.

@le chef, we felt that because the Bloggy Boot Camp blog conference is happening this weekend and because this is the “style” channel of the SITS site, that a light piece on fun things to wear would be okay.

We are extremely heart broken over what’s happening in Japan right now, but I’m not sure what we could have put in this Style channel to convey that.

I know people feel for the people of Japan. I also can understand people not knowing what to wear and wanting a little advice. I don’t feel that there is a wrong or right in regards to the piece itself, it’s just fashion advice – pretty harmless.
I also get it’s the “style” channel, but it was the main header on the email I received, and the main post I was directed to, hence the question of something of a little more substance on the back burner. I just couldn’t get into it like I have past posts; it made me feel like a disconnected American.
        Life goes on.

I just bought a cute lightweight Mossimo jacket from Target that I might wear this weekend. I also bought a Cargo-ish dress from White House Black Market that I might wear Saturday night. I am so feeling this post! Can’t wait for Saturday! : )

I have already been wondering about what to wear in Chicago for the Bloggy Boot Camp! Fortunately, I don’t think I’ll have to worry about a coat in August, but a cardigan would be a good call for those air-conditioned conference rooms.

  13. says

Such cute clothes and shoes. I need me some Bloggy Bootcamp but there doesn’t seem to be one near me in 2011. Any thoughts about doing one in the NYC area?

  14. says

Love it all except for the shoes! Well, I love the shoes but my feet don’t, lol! Although I could wear the first pair!
Have fun at BBC! I am attending in Atlanta in Sept and can’t wait!

  15. says

I’m not sure I’m going to take the fashion advice – I’m much more a what-isn’t-laying-dirty-on-my-floor kinda gal, but I’m definitely going to adopt the last photo on the right’s pose.

‘Cause I feel that’s really what my look has been missing.

  16. says

    Great idea.

I will be attending MY FIRST CONFERENCE this August. It’s the SITS bloggy boot camp in Chicago.

How about a post on WHAT TO TAKE. I don’t even know. I’ve heard basics like a biz card, right? Anything else, SITS girls?

  17. says

Thanks. I needed that. Seriously, what to wear has been a barrier. My one outfit would begin to be conspicuous after awhile.
