Today’s featured blogger, “Drama Mama” can be found blogging at The Scoop on Poop. I love her life motto, “Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”, don’t you? Drama Mama wears many hats including, a mom, a chauffeur, a coach, a cook, a waitress, a maid and a writer/designer. Let’s give her a warm SITS welcome!
What can readers expect when they visit your blog?
This is a tough question. I think my blog is as random as I am. I tend to blog about everything, but mostly my kids. I usually participate in such memes as Wordless Wednesday and Post It Note Tuesday. I try to keep it light, honest, and funny, since the whole reason I started blogging is because I needed a way to laugh at life. I am a stay at home mom with a severe hearing loss, dealing with a child with ADHD/Mood Disorder. This alone can make the days seem long and hard. My husband is also pulling a stint as a cab driver again, and while this offers fabulous blog fodder, it also adds extra stress to my world. Being able to look back and laugh has made life much easier to deal with. I also missed writing tremendously and hoped that this would help my imagination come back. With some prodding, it has.
Tell us about your “Scoop of the Week”:
I started the “Best Scoop of the Week” as another way to get my blog out there and make connections. I started by asking some of the blog friends I had already made if they would be willing to help me with this by being my first features. It started with them attaching their favorite posts by link at some point during their post, which was in response to a silly question I asked of them like “If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?”. It evolved into something bigger, with me playing like an award hostess and introducing them by using the links they sent me, and then posting their answer after. They would also do a guest post for me using a prompt of usually one or two words that I would provide them that would run after the feature. I’ve had so much fun with this. I have not only met a lot of fabulous bloggers this way, but so have my readers.
What is one piece of advice you’d give beginning bloggers?
The biggest lesson I learned from blogging is that promotion is the key to getting readers. Finding sites like SITS and participating by commenting on other blogs, and doing some blog hops in the beginning will not only help you get to know other bloggers, but allows them get to know you too. The key to it all though is that you can’t worry about the numbers. If they like what you blog about, they will come and they will stay. A handful of regulars is better than a Google Friend Connect full of faces that never come back. Stay true to yourself, and your readers will stay true to you.
How do you find the balance in blogging, marriage and family?
I’m not sure that I have found the perfect formula yet. Life gets a little harder around here when I am working on designs in addition to writing, working on one of my two novels, and blogging. I tend not to blog at all on the weekends, freeing my time up to work on other things and still spend time with my family. I’m learning that if I prepare posts ahead of time and schedule them, its frees up a lot of time for other things. I’m a night owl by nature, so when the kids go to bed, that’s when I really get busy. My husband works late, so it all works out just fine.
