Stephanie is the hilarious voice behind Minky (Moo), a relate-able humor blog written by a mother, an actress, and a comedian who manages to make many smile with her entertaining writing style.
How long have you been blogging and what inspired the title Minky (Moo)?
It’s pretty cool that my SITS day is in April because it is my two year blogging anniversary! I wish there was a brilliant story behind the name, but in all honesty, it was the name of my beloved cat, I mean this cat was so crazy loved that my IRL friends referred to me as Minky’s Mom or the Moo Wrangler or most often just Minky. Yup, people called me the cat’s name. Everyone was obsessed with this cat. Anyway, I had been Minky on line for about 20 billion years and since she passed away two months before I started blogging, it just seemed natural to be Minky on my blog. Sometimes I have blog name regret. I think of such great names now….but oh well! Too late, right? All in all I like it!
What can readers expect to find when visiting your blog for the first time?
I’m just a dork making my way through motherhood as best I can. I like to shop at Target. I like to paint furniture. I like to pretend I’m fabulous and glamorous when really we live with my in-laws and I’m in ice cream covered yoga pants and I’ve cut my own hair. Gone are the days of paying someone to blow out my hair and spending my dough on expensive sunglasses and wedge sandals. Now I try to race through a shower before Alvin and The Chipmunks finish their first song. Direct quote from my husband “Honey, you look pretty today. Did you bathe?” Yes. Yes I did. I even put on Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker. You’re welcome.
In what ways have you benefited from blogging?
I’ll never be able to repay what blogging has given me. Shortly after my son was born, my husband took a job and we moved from Los Angeles, where I was a working actor, to Akron, Ohio. We were there for only 2 months before the business closed and we were left knowing no one, unemployed, with a four month old. My in laws packed us up and moved us into their basement apartment. To say I was depressed was an understatement, plus I was suffering from Postpartum Anxiety (which went undiagnosed until my son was over a year old). I missed my career, my friends, my LIFE, and I was terrified being a new mom in a new place. I had no outlet since I wasn’t performing anywhere. A good friend of mine, NakedJen, was the only blogger I knew and one night she suggested I start blogging. Blogging changed everything for me. Within months I was re-connected with a friend from high school who got me writing for SVMoms and the next thing you know I was off to Bloggy BootCamp where I met so many local bloggers…suddenly I had FRIENDS. So, it may sounds cheesy, but blogging pulled me out of a deep depression and gave me a way back to life.
(Sorry. That was long.)
You say you’re an “actress, comedian, and writer”, if you could make a living at just one of those things, which would you choose and why?
Oh, comedian! I love, love being an actress. I love being a writer. But doing sketch comedy? Stand up? Those were the days. Oh, I love it! Actually the more I think about it, I guess writing would be better. I could make my own schedule and hang out with The Boss (and Baby2ElectricBoogaloo when he arrives). I truly love doing all three of those. I had a great life being an actor and comedian, but I am telling you no standing ovation is as cool as when your kid gets his wiggle on cause he is so excited to see you.
You are currently expecting baby #2. What are you looking forward to most about having a new bundle in the house?
New baby head smell. I can’t get enough. I’ll be happy to have my own baby to huff since it’s generally frowned upon to sneak sniffs on other people’s babies. More than that, I can’t wait to see The Boss as a big brother. I know we will have rough patches, but I just think he’s going to be amazing!
