And some education.

So, I wanted to write this post about Oscar Fashion.

Watched the Oscars.

Wrote down the looks I loved.

Then, I went in search of pictures over on Flickr….

But there were none.

You may be asking yourself why I couldn’t just head over the People or TMZ site…

Well, that’s because those photographs are protected and can’t be used without permission.

So, I went to Twitter and wrote this.

the oscars

My friend {and attorney}, Danielle Liss, who is speaking at our upcoming Bloggy Boot Camp in San Diego, answered with this:

how to start blogging

I know what you are thinking.

Just add a credit with a little link….

That works for photos like the one I used above from Flickr- where the photographer has given permission.

However, for the professional Oscar pics- that’s not enough.

You must have permission to use those photos.

Interesting that I could have DVR’ed the show and taken my own photos- will do that next time.

So, this photo about Oscar Fashion turned into a little lesson.

If you want to use a photo someone else has taken, you must ask!

{I’m going to ask Danielle if she’ll break this topic down for us in another post.}

So, what was your favorite Oscar look?

Me?  I thought Gwyneth Paltrow looked fab.  Jennifer Hudson too.

As a photographer, THANK YOU for this post. My work is protected and it always stuns me to find my photos on others’ sites (or videos!) with the watermark cropped out or being used without my permission. It’s not fair to the people who actually buy my work that someone else is getting it for free…and it’s not fair to me because I lose out on gas money :). If someone asks if they can use a photo, I rarely turn them down. All I ask is for a credit back.

…And I thought Jennifer Hudson was stunning too. She looks amazing!

  • Elena says:

Wow, great tip about using DVR and taking your own pics.

  • Grams says:

I don’t know what’s up with my Comment Love link. It’s linking to some of the comments on my blog.

  • Wow, thanks for sharing what you learned, I wouldn’t have thought of pulling photos off of DVR either! Great idea though! 🙂

  • Grams says:

Thanks for the education on photos. This is something I’ve often wondered about and try to be very careful about using other peoples photos.

For me, Gwynneth Paltrow was perfection. And Anne Hathaway was stunning in that electric blue gown.

  • Alexandra says:

Oh, fashion talk.. I love it.

I am the mom to 3 boys…so this is like a candy shop for me.

    I hope I don’t sound too crazy.

I LOVED all of Hathaway’s dresses. I could not STAND what Blanchette decided to wear.

A BIG GRAMMA DOILY ON HER CHEST?? WTH?

  • thanks for the lesson. I only watched about 15 minutes but will catch up with the latest fashions online.

  • Danielle says:

Thanks for the link to our convo last night! I will be writing more on this to give everyone an idea of what is and isn’t in the public domain.

I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think that Perez’s photos are part of the public domain. He got sued A LOT for taking photos and adding writing to them and saying that the writing made them his intellectual property. He eventually settled and he now works with specific agencies. (When the infamous Miley crotch shot happened, it didn’t go on his site, because it wasn’t an agency that he has a contract with.) He still puts the written details on them, and I believe that is still to add his own signature, like a watermark. And if he is still using the same lawyers that he used to, they are damn good, so unless you know for sure that he lets people use a creative commons, don’t borrow from Perez. (I will check that for my guest post.)

But, more importantly, fashion. I am completely smitten with the dress that Mandy Moore wore when performing the song from Tangled. The peacock blue Monique Lhuillier. After that, I liked Mila Kunis, Annette Benning’s earrings and Anne Hathaway’s smile of joy that she kept on all night.

Good lesson. Thx for the tip.

  • ana patricia says:

Loved all the purples that appeared on the red carpet last night!

  • Maggie S. says:

I didn’t watch the whole show, but a tiny bit of the red carpet.

  • Stefanie says:

Great post! It would never have occurred to me either to get photos from the TV. Thanks for the tip!

  • Ashley says:

I wrote my post after reading this this morning and discovered my 3 yo got a pic of the oscars on our TV! How funny! I had to use it. Also, I am now completely paranoid about using any pictures besides my own. Lol. Stop on by and check out my daughters photography. 🙂

  • Interesting about taking pictures off your TV!!???! I would have never thought of that!

  • luci gabel says:

I loved the reds. Anne Hathaway’s first one, on the red carpet, was gorgeous! As was Jennifer hudson’s.

  • Rene W. says:

That’s really interesting – never thought about photographing the TV!

I loved watching the awards… my favorites were Gweneth Paltrow, Jennifer Hudson & Sandra Bullock. Loving all the red dresses last night!

  • I love the dresses of Hillary Swank and Natalie Portman. Absolutely stunning. It was very exciting this morning to post on Fashion Blogs. Thank you to DISH Network for sponsoring my posts. • RocketGirl says:

I thought Gwyneth Paltrow looked rather C3PO-ish, but I’m not a fan of hers. My favorite were Jennifer Hudson, Hailee Steinfeld (I love when girls look like girls!) and I LOVED Reese Witherspoon’s earrings. (And was quite gratified when, moments after I said, “Ooh, look at her earrings!” she said the reason she picked her dress was because of the earrings.)

  • Ann Hathaway looked great, especially in the blue dress. Also Helen Mirin and Oprah looked classy. I liked the move towards the younger demographic but it was a pretty boring show.

  • You should probably read your email – though I don’t know, hitting the 1000 mark might be quite exciting.

There could be a party, and all the people you ignore could be invited.

So… just like a normal party.

(At least that’s what my parties are like.Nice and awkward, just how I like them.)

    • TiffanyRom says:

Okay, Megan, I am totally lost.

What the heck does this mean?

Did you email me? Cause I can’t find it.

I need some translation on this one….

  • Jennifer Hudson is my choice for Oscar fashion MVP!

  • Mimi says:

Depending on the site, you don’t need permission as long as the pics are credited back to the original. I always do fashion posts after all the big award shows 🙂

  • Marie Cole says:

I had no idea, thank you for enlightening us…. who knew? 😉

  • Hailee Steinfeld was awesome and age appropriate, and I loved Halle Berry, and Sandra Bullock, and Hillary Swank…

my friend and sell stella and dot.. and so do I .. she had a red carpet event.. last night.. .for the oscars… fun

  • I have friends that have parties around the Awards! They don’t ask me cuz they know I am a TV misfit.

  • Karen says:

    Hilary Swank?

  • Elizabeth says:

I didn’t really watch it but did get see the part where Gweneth was described as the “latest up and coming Country music star” which totally threw me for a loop!

  • Angie says:

Honestly, I didn’t watch. But I’m sure I’ll get the fashion recap on Entertainment Tonight this evening! Excellent lesson though – thanks for sharing.

  • Jenny says:

I don’t do the fashion thing, nor do I watch the Oscars. Way to boring!

But I would like to see what Helena Bohnam Carter was wearing xD She’s my hero. 😀

  • Jennifer says:

I like Sandra Bullock’s dress, she was just perfect to me. I liked Gwyneth’s 1st dress but not the weird earrings, I loved Mila Kunis’ dress too, and Marissa Tomei’s. Halle Berry looked awesome, but what else is new. I disliked Melissa Leo’s dress, or at least the collar and neckline and slit up the middle. I also didn’t like Gwyneth’s second dress, the one she wore when she performed. She looked so bland and blah in the nude color. And dang it all to heck Christian Bale. Shave. Your. Face. What happened to the hottie from Newsies and Swing Kids?

  • I loved Anne Hathaway’s gowns.

Thanks for the heads up! The rules always seem a little bit fuzzy for things like this, would be great if she can do a whole post dedicated to it in future 🙂

  • I had NO idea you could take your own pictures off the TV and that those would be legal.

Also? Thanks for the reminder that I need to stop ripping off peoples’ photos for my blog…

  • Tracie says:

How interesting that you could take pictures off of your tv. I never would have thought to do it that way.

Also, I see so many blogger take those pictures and use them on their blogs, and even with the little link, I cringe every time. Thank you for not doing that, and for sharing this little lesson.

As far as the fashion….I loved every single one of Anne Hathaway’s dresses, except for the last one. Jennifer Hudson looked phenomenal! I agree that Gweneth Paltrow was fab….but it is too bad that her singing wasn’t (I know. harsh).

  • JessRaquel says:

Pretty sure you could use the pics off of Perez Hilton?? I might be wrong though..

  • Erin says:

Always love the lessons I learn on SITS!
I Loved the royal blue dresses. Especially the one Anne wore!
Ahh who am I kidding, I loved them all, I’ll take one of each! =)

  • Tahnie says:

Thanks for the lesson! I absolutely loved Mila Kunis’ dress! Although I am a redhead and I’m a sucker for purple.

    Hope your weekend was fabulous!
