When it comes to how to be happy, sometimes the secret to finding the brighter side of things can be a bit elusive. It is easy to get caught up in the everyday demands of family, schedules, and commitments.
That’s why we like to think that being happy is often times a choice. We have to choose to engage in activities that help us to see the lighter side of life.Β Read on for our five simple suggestions on how to be happy.
How to Be Happy: 5 Things All Happy Women Do
If you’re ready for your mood to go sky-high, then consider your approach to life. Do you have all five of our suggestions covered?
1) Connect With Other Women
As women, we thrive on connections. There is nothing quite like finding a kindred spirit and saying, What? You too?
Take the time to foster relationships with other women. These might be with family, friends, or even online buddies! Whatever issue you’re facing, there’s no better fix than the unique perspectives of other women. Plus, often times you do not have to explain much for another woman to know exactly what you mean.
2) Take Time for Themselves
When was the last time you scheduled a hair appointment for yourself? Took yourself out to coffee…”just because”? Or maybe even shut off your phone and unplugged completely? (gasp!)
In a time of complex and automated schedules, it can be very difficult to find time for yourself. That’s why you have to make the decision to create time in your day purely for yourself and stick to it. Consider using your lunch hour, waking up a little earlier, and even having a certain time of day that you turn your phone off.
Spend uninterrupted time doing something purely for yourself and watch just how big of a difference it will make.
3) Exercise
Did you ever see the instant movie classic, Legally Blonde? One of my favorite quotes was from Elle Woods when she said, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.”
Women who take time to incorporate physical activity in their day have more energy and are often times more relaxed.
I’ll be the first to admit that getting to the gym never enters my stream of consciousness, BUT, I will say that when I’m in need for an emotional pick-me-up, getting outside and going for a walk really can do the trick.
4) Sleep
Have you ever gotten a really good night’s sleep and woken up the next morning feeling like you can conquer the world? When I’m not reaching for caffeine first thing the morning, I’m faster, smarter, and, dare I say it, happy about working.
Regular sleep is not just important, it’s essential to a healthier, happier you.
5) Follow Their Passion
I have long thought this goal to be somewhat intangible… maybe even a bit hokey. But truth be told, when everything in our online world started clicking, and things really began to take shape, my perspective changed entirely.
No matter how you define your passion, one of the most happy-making things you can do is harness that talent into something real. The act of following your passion allows us to improve our innate skills in areas weβre already strong in and become better
Keeping yourself engaged in meaningful work is one of the largest part of figuring out how to be happy.
Your Turn
Which one of these five things will you do today? Choose one. Choose them all. Just try to do them now and again.
You’ll find you feel lighter and less stressed. Less confined. More you.
And when you do try these methods, let us know in our Facebook group. We want to hear about your successes, setbacks, and everything in-between!

This is nice blog and I am 100% agree with you….thankyou very much…
Very detailed infos; quite impressive; thanks for the share
One Of them π Along with My Job and Family
I would also add Asking For Help.
It sounds lame but paying for or asking for help goes a LOOONG way to making me feel less stressed, happier, and give me more time to work on these tips! π
Thanks for this. I’m glad to say that I’m doing most of theses things. I could stand to exercise more.
#5 & #3 really stood out to me! I actually did exercise today so #3 is done. As for #5 I am grateful you wrote this because it opened my eyes a little more to the reality that my passion, my dream is attainable. Thank you!
I am finally! dong something I’ve dreamed of my whole life: illustrating a children’s book! I’ve cleared out all the other stuff in my life this summer ( I teach during the school year) in order to get it done before September. The story is about a little girl whose dreams are almost shattered when her coach mentions her weight… I am doing this for all the little girls in the world who grow up feeling bad about their bodies. I’ve been drawing for days and will be posting works in progress on my blog soon.
Great post, I wholeheartedly agree with all of these points. Especially number 5 which to me absolutely encompasses all the above 4 points: the work I do (writing/creative media services) involves being connected, doing what I love, making time for myself and my dreams, and moving things forward daily (pure endorphin rush). Alright, so it doesn’t include much in the way of sleep, but I’ll get there soon enough!
Oh my gosh, I totally agree with this! Each one! And I say the same thing about endorphins, lol, I should check that movie out!
One of the things that makes me happy is a favorite meal, home-cooked or otherwise. Who doesn’t love good food? π
A great night’s sleep almost always makes me happy and connecting with other women is also a huge component in making me happy. I’ve always struggled with female friendships since I’ve had more male friends over the years but as I’ve gotten older I value those female friendships for connection.
I will have to wait for tomorrow to exercise, the sun is up now and way too hot. I forget how good it makes me feel until I actually get out and do it. Today I will make that much need hair appointment.
I’m all about #2. As an only child, I love & cherish my free time.
I’m doing #3 (heading to the gym, putting the kids in child watch there!) and #5 blogging!
Great list!! I really need to get the exercise one back in my life as when I was doing it regularly it really did make me feel great and look better too.
I definitely need to work on getting more sleep!
I do take time out for myself, every weekend if possible. Just for a couple of hours to do stuff like read a book at a cafe, get a pedicure.
I love this, Fran! #3 is something I have to do to stay sane. I run on my elliptical every other day for 30-40 minutes. It’s not a lot or a life changing work out plan, but it keeps my metabolism going and helps me feel healthy. #1 is so true too! We need connections and we need them IRL too. Today, guess what I’m doing? I’m going to meet up with Tracie IRL! SO excited to meet a bloggy friend! π
Love the Oprah quote. I agree with you – all five are really effective tools for happiness.
Great reminder. I need to print these types of lists to keep the front and center of my attention.
Smile for now reason, make someones day with a random act of kindness, surprise the kids with an out-of-the-blue adventure, plan a secret date for you and your hubby for the night!
These are awesome and I would add…
spending as much time with your family as you possibly can, and
practice your faith fervently.
π
I’m sharing on my page… I love this!! If only I could get into the habit of getting enough sleep!!
I did #1! Spent some good quality time with my mom and grandmother. We went shopping and out to eat! So much fun!
I’ll be getting more sleep! Been going to bed way too late recently! I look like night of the living dead! Definitely not good for a pregnant woman with a 3 year old to watch and blog to write! π
I agree with all of the above. I actively work on #1 and #5. I need to focus more on #4 and #3.
Exercise!! I went for a run despite this insane heatwave and loved every minute of it.
In all honesty, I do all of these on a daily basis. Without my support system of friends I would be lost. Without my trainer I would be fat. Without my me time I would be a bitch. Without sleep I would be a super bitch and not following my passions in life would make me sad. And why would I want to be any of those negative things? So I make sure to take care of me first, and I don’t think that is a bad thing.
Awesome and oh so true!
I’d just add one more thing: gratitude, being aware of what I am blessed with and be thankful for it gives me peace that I live in the now and the now is amazing π
I over endulge in all except excersize.. hmmmm… But I am not sad π
Sleeeeeppppp. Sleep makes me very, very happy. And I get to sleep in tomorrow, so I’m beyond thrilled right now! π
This is great! I did #5 today, worked on a new website for a client! I need to schedule time to do more of everything on this list more often! The only way to really be your best (self, mother, wife, friend) is to take care of YOU! Thanks for the reminder!
I did #3 today…..Tai Cheng.
